With interest from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and in collaboration with the Cement Association of Canada, Concrete Ontario is pleased to host world renowned concrete pavement expert and Director of the Iowa State University National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center), Dr. Peter Taylor, to provide an overview of the latest U.S. Concrete Pavement Research and Innovations. The CP Tech Center is a national hub for concrete pavement research and technology transfer at the intersection of public agencies, industry, and academia. It was founded in 2000 and via research and tech transfer has been instrumental in advancing strategic improvements in how concrete pavements are specified, built, and maintained.
Dr. Taylor’s presentation focuses some interesting and unique pavement related research underway at the Center and nationwide. The discussion also covered research needs expressed by the paving community and plans for future work. The second half described innovations being introduced into everyday practice including adoption of Performance Engineered Mixture (PEM) based specifications, mixture optimization tools, real-time-smoothness and changes to paving equipment that all lead toward lower costs, improved environmental impact and a longer lasting, more reliable, infrastructure.
